Mute your Mac automatically when you are away from home
Create an Away profile with an IP address rule that matches when your Mac is not on your home network, and add Mute / unmute audio. A Home profile with a higher priority unmutes it when you are back.

How to set it up
- Create the Away profile. Add a profile named Away with priority 5.
- Add the IP rule at home. While on your home network, add an IP address / range rule, choose "This Mac’s local IP", fill in your current range, then switch it to "My IP is NOT in this range".
- Add the actions. Add Mute / unmute audio set to mute, and Mute / unmute microphone if you want the mic silenced in public too.
- Create the Home profile. Add a Home profile with your home Wi-Fi, priority 1, that unmutes audio and the microphone and sets your usual volume.

“Away” is every network except one
The awkward moments happen in places you did not plan for: a café, a lecture hall, a client’s office. Listing every network you might ever join is impossible, but describing home is easy. An IP address / range rule set to NOT in this range turns that around: the Away profile matches on every network that is not your home network.
The Home profile, with a higher priority (a lower number), wins whenever you are home. Everywhere else, Away is the profile that matches and it silences the Mac.
Getting the home range right
You do not need to know networking. While you are at home, add the rule, choose This Mac’s local IP and use the button that fills in your current range; most home networks look like 192.168.1.0/24. Then flip the switch to “NOT in this range”.
A detail worth knowing: the rule only matches while your Mac actually has an address of that type, so switching Wi-Fi off in a plane does not count as “away”. That is deliberate, so a dropped connection at home does not mute you.
Make away mode more private
Muting is the start. The same Away profile can also mute the microphone for the whole system, set the volume to a low level for when you do unmute, or run a shortcut that turns on a Focus mode. Coming home switches all of it back.
Frequently asked questions
Why an IP rule and not a Wi-Fi rule?
A Wi-Fi rule matches one network. "Not in my home range" matches every other network at once: cafés, hotels, the office and your phone’s hotspot.
What happens when I have no connection at all?
A "NOT in this range" rule only matches while your Mac has an address, so going offline does not switch the Away profile on by itself.
Can I unmute for one video?
Yes. Unmute as usual; the profile only mutes again the next time it switches on.
